Israeli Phone Number Format: Mobile Prefixes, Area Codes and +972

Quick answer

Country code
+972
Mobile numbers
10 digits in local format, starting with 05: 05X-XXX-XXXX, for example 050-123-4567.
International format
Drop the leading 0 and add +972: +972 50-123-4567 (E.164: +972501234567).
Israeli mobile prefixes
050, 051, 052, 053, 054, 055 and 058.
Landlines
9 digits with a regional area code (02, 03, 04, 08, 09), or 10 digits with a nationwide 07X code.

What an Israeli mobile number looks like

An Israeli mobile number has three parts. Using 050-123-4567 as an example:

PartExampleMeaning
Trunk prefix0Used only when dialing inside Israel. Dropped in international format.
Mobile prefix50Identifies a mobile number (5X). Written with the 0 as 050.
Subscriber number123-4567Seven digits.

The same number in the formats you will meet:

FormatExampleWhere it is used
Local, with dashes050-123-4567How Israelis usually write it
Local, digits only0501234567Forms, Excel files, Israeli SMS systems
International+972 50-123-4567Business cards, websites for foreign visitors
E.164+972501234567Databases, APIs, WhatsApp links
Without the plus sign972501234567Some APIs and CSV exports

A common mistake is keeping the 0 after the country code (+9720501234567). That number is invalid.

Israeli mobile prefixes (050–058)

PrefixOriginally allocated toNotes
050PelephoneIsraeli mobile
051Newer operatorsIsraeli mobile
052CellcomIsraeli mobile
053Hot MobileIsraeli mobile; former 057 numbers moved here
054PartnerIsraeli mobile
055Virtual operators (MVNOs)Israeli mobile
058Golan TelecomIsraeli mobile
056, 059Palestinian mobile networksNot Israeli mobile numbers
057–Discontinued; subscribers moved to 053 with the same seven digits

The prefix does not tell you the carrier. Israel has had mobile number portability since 2007, so a 054 number may belong to any operator today. Use the prefix only to check that a number is an Israeli mobile number.

Landline area codes

07XNationwide numbers (072, 073, 074, 076, 077, 079), often VoIP077-123-4567

Other formats you may see: 1-800 (toll-free) and 1-700 numbers, and short business numbers such as *2000 (star numbers), which work only for calls from inside Israel. Most landline and special numbers cannot receive SMS.

How to dial an Israeli number from abroad

Dial your country's exit code, then 972, then the number without the leading 0:

On a mobile phone, the + sign replaces the exit code and works from any country.

Validating and normalizing Israeli mobile numbers

After removing spaces, dashes, dots and brackets, this pattern accepts the local, international and E.164 forms, and only the Israeli mobile prefixes:

^(?:\+972|972|0)(?:50|51|52|53|54|55|58)\d{7}$

Avoid a range such as 05[0-9]: it also accepts 056, 057 and 059. A small JavaScript function that cleans a number and returns both forms:

function normalizeIsraeliMobile(input) {
  let n = String(input).replace(/[\s\-().]/g, "");
  if (n.startsWith("00972")) n = n.slice(2);         // 00972... -> 972...
  if (/^5\d{8}$/.test(n)) n = "0" + n;              // Excel dropped the leading 0
  const m = n.match(/^(?:\+972|972|0)(5[0-58]\d{7})$/);
  if (!m) return null; // not an Israeli mobile number
  return { local: "0" + m[1], e164: "+972" + m[1] };
}

normalizeIsraeliMobile("+972 50-123-4567");
// { local: "0501234567", e164: "+972501234567" }

To clean a whole list without writing code, use the free Israeli phone number cleaner: it normalizes formats, restores leading zeros that Excel drops, removes duplicates and separates landlines.

Example numbers for testing and documentation

Israel has no reserved range of fictional phone numbers. Numbers such as 050-123-4567 or 0501234567 are good for documentation and form placeholders, but they may belong to real people. Never send test SMS to a made-up number: use your own phone, or a number your team controls.

Sending SMS to Israeli numbers

Only mobile numbers (050–058) can reliably receive SMS. If you send from a system outside Israel, check that it accepts the format you store, and that Hebrew text is sent as Unicode. Global SMS connects directly to Israeli carriers through a REST SMS API and a web dashboard for bulk SMS campaigns. For encoding, sender IDs and timing, see SMS in Israel: a developer's guide.

The country code for Israel is +972. When you use it, drop the leading 0 of the local number.

Which prefixes are Israeli mobile numbers?

Israeli mobile prefixes are 050, 051, 052, 053, 054, 055 and 058. The 056 and 059 prefixes belong to Palestinian mobile networks, and 057 is no longer in use.
